Juan Camilo Moreno Sastoque

Dr. Juan Moreno is Principal Investigator and Co-Director of the Neural Rehabilitation Group in Cajal Institute at CSIC in Madrid, Spain. He is the Responsible of the Associated Unit to CSIC from the National Spinal Cord Injury Hospital promoting translational research to generate knowledge and deliver solutions for disabled people. His main research fields are wearable robotics, neuroprosthetics and neural rehabilitation technologies. In each one of them, he has made contributions which have greatly impacted the robotics and neural engineering communities. He has led development of several human-machine interaction schemes applied for neural rehabilitation of patients with brain or spinal lesions. One of his main lines of research investigates the benefits of cooperative control in the fusion of neuro-prosthetic and robotic exoskeletons in improving locomotion in stroke and spinal cord injured patients. He is currently leading research projects on modeling and characterization of longitudinal robot-aided treatments towards optimization of robotic therapy and FES-based therapy with intelligent controllers. He has supervised 6 completed doctoral theses and currently is supervising 7 doctoral projects. Dr. Moreno has coordinated several international European projects in the last 10 years. He is founder & Co-Chair of the IEEE/RAS Technical Committee (TC) on Wearable Robotics. He is co-founder of Technaid S.L., “spin-off” company of CSIC. His contributions have been licensed for exploitation and his concepts to establish robot-based therapies have won 4 outstanding awards and 4 personal prizes including the Young Investigator Medal by Royal Academy of Engineering (2015), Princess Infanta Cristina Award (2011), MIT’s Technology Review 35 Spain 2012 Award, and the Royal Academy of Engineering of Spain Young Scientists Medal 2015.
